How Attrition works

What counts as damage: Each week we measure every projected starter against his own early-season snap baseline, then count the shortfall as damage only when a real injury is behind it, an Out, Doubtful, or Questionable game status, or a stint on IR or PUP. A starter who sits healthy (benched, rested, or pulled once a game is out of hand) doesn't ding the score. We also compare each starter to how long a healthy player at his position normally stays on the field given the score and clock, so garbage-time pulls aren't mistaken for injuries.

How it's weighted: The injury report layers its own penalty on top (Out hurts most, Questionable least). Position groups are weighted by impact: QB hits hardest and cornerback counts nearly twice a baseline group (coverage is second only to QB in the outcome data), while running back counts less than a full group because it's the most replaceable, and special teams barely moves the needle. Units roll up at 55% offense (QB folded in), 35% defense, 10% special teams.

How it becomes a score: The season number is the average of those weekly scores, ranked as a percentile against every team at the same week of the season since 2018 — a Week 3 board is measured against other Week 3s, never against finished seasons. A 90+ means genuinely elite health for the era, not just a healthy week.

Same for everyone: There are no settings and no per-user weights. The number you see is the number everyone sees. The one way to re-slice it is Ignore QB, a fixed lens (not a personal setting) that drops the quarterback from Overall and Offense to show how healthy the roster is around him — ranked against every team’s ex-QB score, not against the ordinary one. It re-slices Attrition, so it is there under every span but This week: who can suit up is a live snapshot that exists only there, and it has no ex-QB form. It also steps aside once you open the offensive units, where QB is a column of its own — that answers the same question by showing the number rather than removing it.
